The developer preview release of Mozilla's next generation Thunderbird email client is now available for testing.

According to Mozilla Thunderbird 2 Beta 1 Release Notes, new features in this build:
  • Message Tags
  • Visual Theme
  • Session History Navigation
  • Folder Views
  • Improved Support For Extensions
  • Improved Offline Management
  • Folder Summary Popups
  • Saved Search Folder Performance
  • Find As You Type
  • Improved Filing Tools
  • Updates to the extension system
  • New Windows installer
  • Mac OS X Universal Binaries

(BTW, Mozilla.org typed "MacOS X Univesal Binaries", I believe it is just a typo.) The point is... I don't think "Universal Binary" is a new feature, in June this year, Thunderbird 1.5.0.4 was released in Universal Binary.

Mozilla Thunderbird 2 Beta 1 requires:
  • Mac OS X 10.2.x and later
    Macintosh computer with an Intel x86 or PowerPC G3, G4, or G5 processor
    128 MB RAM (Recommended: 256 MB RAM or greater)
    200 MB hard drive space
  • Linux kernel - 2.2.14 with the following libraries or packages minimums:
    glibc 2.3.2, gtk+2.0, XFree86-3.3.6, fontconfig (also known as xft), libstdc++5
    Intel Pentium II or AMD K6-III+ 233 MHz CPU (Recommended: 500MHz or greater)
    64 MB RAM (Recommended: 128 MB RAM or greater)
    52 MB hard drive space
  • Windows 98 or later (Windows XP recommended)
    Pentium 233 MHz (Recommended: Pentium 500MHz or greater)
    64 MB RAM (Recommended: 128 MB RAM or greater)
    52 MB hard drive space
