As indicated by their words, default fonts being used for the typeface.
Most webmasters specify a particular typeface, but not everybody has that font. And if you don't have the font as the webmaster specified, the typeface in that preference menu will be used.
Basically there are two main types of typeface, Proportional and Monospace.
Proportional is the fonts like Arial, where letter "W" is wider than letter "i".
Whereas Monospace, all letters has equal width, usually used for coding font.
Serif, sans-serif, cursive, fantasy are all subdivisions.
Serif is fonts like Times New Roman, sans-serif is like Arial (without the ending strokes). cursive is sometimes called script font, and fantasy is for decoration use.
And the minimum font size is the minimum font size that would be displayed. In other words, if the font size specified is smaller than the "minimum font size", your "minimum font size" will be used instead.
